Research on Spanking: It’s Bad For ALL Kids
Usually academic articles couch their recommendations in dense language, but this is about a researcher who just lays it out in “Spanking and Child Development: We Know Enough Now to Stop Hitting Our Children.”
Straight up.
While I agree (as do probably most of the people reading this blog) that spanking as a general form of discipline is wrong and counterproductive, the real question is to what degree? Is the author talking about putting the kid over your knee and actually giving several spanks (what most of us got as kids)? Does this include the rare instance when they do something so bad and shocking that you give them one really hard smack on the butt as they’re running away? If it’s the latter as well as the former, then, unfortunately, Sam is doomed.
